DOC. MIGRATION / TRANSFER PROCEDURE FIXED SCOPE
Klaviyo Migration Service

Klaviyo migration service, and the checklist we run.

Moving to Klaviyo is mostly a rebuild, not an export. Contacts are the easy part. Automations, segments and forms don't transfer from any platform, and the cutover order decides whether your sender reputation survives the switch. Below: the checklist we run on every migration, what each platform's data does on the way in, and a fixed-scope project if you'd rather we did it. Free migration audit before any commitment.

By platform

Klaviyo migration by platform: what moves, what you rebuild.

Whether Klaviyo has a built-in import for your current platform, what has to be rebuilt by hand, and how long the move typically takes. Sources: Klaviyo's help centre migration guides, checked October 2026.

Checklist

The Klaviyo migration checklist.

Fifteen checks in five phases, in the order we run them. Skip one and you find out after cutover, usually in the deliverability report.

  1. 01 Before you touch Klaviyo

    • Inventory the old account

Lists or audiences, tags, custom fields, segments, automations, templates, sign-up forms, sending domain and your current deliverability baseline. Give every item a verdict: migrate, rebuild or retire.

    • Export what no importer carries

Tags, groups and custom fields, plus any reports and engagement history you want to keep. Old platforms rarely let you back in once the plan lapses.

    • Clean the list before import

Remove invalid and long-inactive addresses first. Klaviyo recommends it, and since February 2025 every active profile you import counts toward your Klaviyo plan.

  2. 02 Set up Klaviyo

    • Connect your store first

Shopify, BigCommerce or WooCommerce goes in first, so order history syncs while everything else is built.

    • Authenticate a branded sending domain

Add Klaviyo's DNS records so SPF, DKIM and DMARC line up with the domain you send from.

    • Map fields to profile properties

Decide what each tag, group and custom field becomes in Klaviyo before anything is imported, so segments can be rebuilt on clean properties.

  3. 03 Move the data

    • Import contacts with their consent

Use the built-in integration where one exists (Mailchimp) or a CSV import. Email and SMS consent travel separately, so check both.

    • Import unsubscribes and bounces as suppressions

Every unsubscribed, bounced and cleaned address goes onto the Klaviyo suppression list before the first send.

    • Check suppressions against existing profiles

With Klaviyo's Mailchimp integration, profiles that already existed in Klaviyo aren't suppressed even if Mailchimp cleaned them. Check every import the same way before anything sends.

  4. 04 Rebuild

    • Rebuild automations as flows

No platform's automations transfer to Klaviyo. Rebuild each one with Klaviyo triggers, filters and splits, and test it on sample profiles.

    • Rebuild or import templates

Custom-coded templates can be imported as HTML; everything else is rebuilt. Convert merge tags to Klaviyo syntax either way.

    • Replace every sign-up form

Pop-ups, embedded forms, checkout opt-ins and third-party form tools all point at Klaviyo, or new subscribers keep landing in the old platform.

  5. 05 Cut over and warm up

    • Never run two sets of automations

Pause the old platform's automations before Klaviyo flows go live, or customers get two abandoned cart emails.

    • Send to engaged profiles first

Klaviyo's guidance: if you send daily, mail only recently engaged profiles for the first week; if you send less often, for your first 2-3 campaigns. Widen while engagement holds.

    • Watch deliverability, then close the old account

We monitor deliverability daily for the first 14 days after cutover. Export the reports you want, then downgrade or close the old platform.

Frequently asked

Klaviyo migration FAQ

Q.01 How do I migrate to Klaviyo? +

/ Answer

In five phases. Audit and export what you have in the old platform; set up Klaviyo, connect your store and authenticate your sending domain; import contacts with their consent and suppressions; rebuild automations as flows, plus templates, segments and forms; then cut over (old automations paused, Klaviyo flows live) and warm up by sending to your most engaged profiles first.

Q.02 How long does a Klaviyo migration take? +

/ Answer

It depends on the platform. In our playbooks: 1-2 weeks from Shopify Email; 2-3 weeks from Mailchimp, Omnisend, MailerLite and Constant Contact; 3-4 weeks from ActiveCampaign and HubSpot; 4-6 weeks for complex Mailchimp accounts with custom integrations. Warm-up continues for several weeks after cutover.

Q.03 How much does a Klaviyo migration cost? +

/ Answer

As a done-for-you service, a fixed-scope project fee of $3-15K depending on scope, with the exact price in writing within 24 hours of a free audit. On top of that: your Klaviyo plan ($20 a month at 500 active profiles and $150 at 10,000, as of 1 October 2026) and usually one month of paying for both platforms while you cut over.

Q.04 How do I import contacts into Klaviyo? +

/ Answer

Upload a CSV. In Klaviyo, go to Audience, then Lists & segments, open the list, choose Manage List, then Import contacts. Put email addresses (or phone numbers) in the first column, keep the file to 50 MB or less, and map each column to a Klaviyo property. Consent comes from an Email Marketing Consent column (Subscribed, Unsubscribed or Never Subscribed) or a consent timestamp; without either, Klaviyo asks whether these contacts subscribed. Import unsubscribes the same way, marked Unsubscribed, before the first send. From Mailchimp, the built-in integration does this for you (Klaviyo Help Center, updated 30 March 2026).

Q.05 Does Klaviyo have a migration tool? +

/ Answer

For a few platforms. Klaviyo's help centre has platform-specific migration guides for Mailchimp, Constant Contact, Campaign Monitor, HubSpot, Listrak, Sailthru and Salesforce Marketing Cloud. Of the seven platforms on this page, only Mailchimp has a working built-in import; Klaviyo's Constant Contact integration is no longer offered to new accounts, and it has no built-in HubSpot integration. Everything else moves by CSV import. Automations never transfer.

Q.06 What does not transfer to Klaviyo? +

/ Answer

From any platform: automations, segments and sign-up forms, which are rebuilt. Templates come across only as custom HTML you import and fix. From Mailchimp, tags, groups and extra merge fields need a separate export. Engagement history comes across only in part (90 days from Mailchimp, engagement tiers from Constant Contact).

Q.07 Will I lose subscribers or hurt deliverability when I switch? +

/ Answer

Not if consent and suppressions come across correctly and you warm up. Import every contact with its subscription status, put unsubscribes and bounces on the suppression list, and send to your most engaged profiles first, widening over several weeks while engagement holds. Blasting the full list from a new account on day one is how migrations damage sender reputation.

Q.08 Can I run my old platform and Klaviyo at the same time? +

/ Answer

Briefly, during cutover. Keep the old platform collecting sign-ups until every form points at Klaviyo, but never let both platforms run automations or campaigns at once: customers get duplicate emails, and an unsubscribe in one platform does not reach the other.

Q.09 Can I migrate to Klaviyo myself? +

/ Answer

Yes. The checklist on this page is the one we run. Contacts are the easy part. Flows, segments, the cutover order and the warm-up are where DIY migrations lose revenue, and that's the part we're paid to engineer.

Q.10 Why is Klaviyo so expensive? +

/ Answer

Because it bills on active profiles, everyone you can email, not on the emails you send. Since February 2025 your plan must cover that full count, so an unpruned list pushes you up tiers. As of October 2026 the email plan is $20 a month at 500 profiles and $150 at 10,000, with SMS on top. Suppressing profiles that never engage is the fastest way to bring the bill down.

Q.11 Is Klaviyo worth the money? +

/ Answer

For ecommerce brands doing roughly $500K a year or more, usually yes, because its flows and segmentation run on order and browsing data that cheaper tools don't capture as well. Below that, or for a store with a small list and simple needs, Mailchimp, Omnisend or Shopify Messaging can cost less. The deciding factor is whether you will actually build the flows and segments you are paying for.
