Mailchimp to Klaviyo Migration, Without Breaking Anything

The reason most ecommerce brands are stuck on Mailchimp isn't that they like it. It's that the migration scares them. Lost contacts, broken automations, bounced inbox placement, and 90 days of email revenue at risk. We've migrated 200+ brands from Mailchimp to Klaviyo without losing a single deliverability point. Done-for-you, fixed timeline, guaranteed parity at switch-over.

Why migrate

Why brands move from Mailchimp to Klaviyo.

01

Klaviyo is built for ecommerce; Mailchimp is built for newsletters

Klaviyo's native Shopify integration, predictive analytics, and product-event triggers do things Mailchimp cannot replicate, even with paid add-ons. The Klaviyo flow library alone closes a meaningful revenue gap.

02

Mailchimp's pricing scales worse than Klaviyo's for ecommerce

Mailchimp prices on contacts including unsubscribed; Klaviyo prices on active profiles you're actually emailing. For brands above 20K subscribers, Klaviyo is typically cheaper on a per-active-subscriber basis.

03

Klaviyo's segmentation is fundamentally more powerful

Behaviour-based segmentation in Mailchimp requires complex tagging. In Klaviyo it's native, real-time, and works with any combination of profile, event, and predictive properties.

04

Reporting in Klaviyo actually shows revenue impact

Mailchimp reports opens and clicks. Klaviyo reports revenue per recipient, attributed orders, and flow contribution. You can't optimise what you can't measure.

— What breaks in bad migrations

Where DIY Mailchimp migrations go wrong.

These are the things most brands lose when they migrate without a structured process. Each one is fixable, but only if you know to fix it before cutover, not after.

  • Subscriber engagement signals lost (open/click history not transferred 1:1)
  • Automation logic flattened (Mailchimp customer journeys don't translate directly to Klaviyo flow filters)
  • Sender reputation reset (new authentication = new warm-up cycle if not handled)
  • Tag-based segments break without manual rebuild
  • Embedded forms on the website break unless updated to Klaviyo embeds
  • Triggered transactional emails go silent if not reconfigured pre-cutover
Procedure

The 5-step Mailchimp-to-Klaviyo process.

Same process every time. Same outcome every time. Done-for-you, fixed timeline, full transparency.

  1. 01 PHASE

    Pre-migration audit

Full audit of current Mailchimp account: subscribers, segments, automations, templates, deliverability metrics. Establishes baseline and identifies what must be rebuilt vs. what can be preserved.

  2. 02 PHASE

    Klaviyo account architecture

New Klaviyo account set up with proper list structure, profile properties mapped from Mailchimp tags, integration with your store (Shopify, WooCommerce, etc.), and authentication (DKIM, SPF, DMARC) configured for your sending domain.

  3. 03 PHASE

    Flow rebuild + parity testing

Every Mailchimp automation rebuilt as a Klaviyo flow with equivalent (or improved) logic. Tested against sample profiles before any real customer exposure.

  4. 04 PHASE

    Subscriber + history migration

Subscribers exported with consent flags, engagement scoring, and segment membership preserved where possible. Imported into Klaviyo with proper engagement-based suppression for inactive contacts.

  5. 05 PHASE

    Cutover + warm-up

DNS records updated, sending domain warmed if needed, Mailchimp sending paused, Klaviyo flows activated. Daily deliverability monitoring for the first 14 days post-cutover.

Frequently asked

Mailchimp migration FAQ

Q.01 Will I lose subscribers in the migration? +

— Answer

No. Subscribers transfer 1:1, with consent flags preserved. The only exception is bounced or unsubscribed contacts, which Klaviyo automatically suppresses on import (correctly, for deliverability).

Q.02 How long is email paused during the migration? +

— Answer

Zero downtime in most cases. Mailchimp keeps sending until the day before cutover; Klaviyo flows activate the morning of cutover. Some brands prefer a 24-hour quiet period to inspect everything; that's optional.

Q.03 Will my flows work the same way after migration? +

— Answer

Functionally yes, often better. Klaviyo's flow filter logic is more powerful than Mailchimp's journey logic, so most flows get rebuilt with improvements (better segmentation, better timing) rather than 1:1 ports.

Q.04 How is engagement history preserved? +

— Answer

Recent open/click activity (60-90 days) is imported as profile properties. Klaviyo uses recent engagement, not historical lifetime data, so the practical impact on deliverability is minimal.

Q.05 What happens to my Mailchimp templates? +

— Answer

Mailchimp templates do not import directly. We rebuild templates in Klaviyo using your brand assets and the existing Mailchimp templates as design reference. Most brands take this as a chance to refresh anyway.

Q.06 How does pricing change after migration? +

— Answer

For most ecommerce brands above 10-15K active subscribers, Klaviyo is similar or cheaper than Mailchimp once you stop paying for unsubscribed contacts. We model the cost difference during the migration audit.
