What Is Klaviyo? What It Does and Who It's For (2026)

What is Klaviyo, what is it used for, and is it free on Shopify? A plain-English guide to the B2C CRM from an official Klaviyo partner agency.

Table of contents

Klaviyo is the platform most ecommerce brands mean when they say “our email”. It is also one of the least understood tools in the stack, because it has grown from an email sender into something closer to a customer database that happens to send messages. This guide explains what Klaviyo is, what it is actually used for, what it costs (including whether it is free on Shopify), and where it falls short.

We are an official Klaviyo partner and have run it for 800+ brands, so this is the practitioner’s version, not the brochure.

What is Klaviyo?

Klaviyo is a B2C CRM and marketing automation platform for ecommerce brands. It connects to your store (Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and others), builds a profile for every customer from their orders and browsing, and uses that data to send automated, personalised email, SMS, WhatsApp and push messages. Brands use it mainly to turn first-time buyers into repeat customers.

That is the snippet answer. The longer answer is that Klaviyo has three layers, and understanding them explains why it beats simpler tools:

  1. Data. Every visitor who identifies themselves gets a profile. Every event (viewed product, added to cart, placed order, opened email, clicked SMS) lands on that profile in real time.
  2. Decisioning. Segments and flows read that data. “Bought twice, not in 60 days, high predicted lifetime value” is a segment you can build in a minute.
  3. Channels. Email, SMS, MMS, RCS, WhatsApp, mobile app push and social, as of September 2026. One profile, one consent record, one set of reports.

Klaviyo’s own homepage now calls it “the autonomous B2C CRM”, which signals where the product is heading: AI agents that plan and build campaigns and handle customer service, on top of the same data layer.

What is Klaviyo used for?

In practice, ecommerce brands use Klaviyo for six jobs. The first two carry most of the revenue.

1. Automated flows. Behaviour-triggered sequences that run 24/7: welcome series, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, replenishment, back-in-stock, win-back and sunset. Flows are where a well-built account earns its keep, because they fire at the moment of intent.

2. Segmented campaigns. Broadcast emails and texts sent to segments built from purchase history, engagement and predicted behaviour, rather than to “everyone”. See our Klaviyo segmentation guide for the segments that matter.

3. List growth. Pop-ups, fly-outs, embedded and multi-step sign-up forms that collect email and SMS consent and write data straight to the profile.

4. Customer data and analytics. A real-time customer data layer, predictive analytics (predicted lifetime value, churn risk, expected next order date) on paid plans, and revenue attribution for email and SMS.

5. Reviews. Klaviyo Reviews collects product reviews and feeds them into emails, forms and segments. It is free up to 50 orders a month, then $25 a month for up to 250 orders (Klaviyo pricing page, September 2026).

6. Customer service. Newer products: Helpdesk, Customer Hub (a self-service account area) and Customer Agent, an AI agent that answers order and product questions. These are paid add-ons.

Put simply, Klaviyo is used to make the second, third and tenth purchase happen without someone manually pressing send.

How Klaviyo works with Shopify

Most Klaviyo accounts run on Shopify, and the integration is the reason. Install the Klaviyo app, connect the store, and Klaviyo syncs customers, orders, products and catalogue data, plus on-site behaviour through its tracking script. That data powers product blocks in emails, dynamic abandoned cart content and every purchase-based segment.

Shopify vs Klaviyo: Shopify runs your store; Klaviyo runs your retention marketing on top of it. Shopify has its own email tool, Shopify Email, which is fine for simple newsletters. We cover where it runs out of road in Klaviyo vs Shopify Email, and the setup details most brands miss in how to connect Klaviyo to Shopify.

Is Klaviyo free on Shopify?

Partly. As of September 2026:

  • The Klaviyo Shopify app is free to install (Shopify App Store listing).
  • Klaviyo’s free plan covers up to 250 active profiles and 500 emails a month, plus a small monthly allowance of mobile messaging (Klaviyo lists $5 of SMS/MMS a month on klaviyo.com).
  • Free-plan emails and forms carry Klaviyo branding, and support is email-only for the first 60 days.
  • Predictive analytics and generative AI features are paid-plan only.

So Klaviyo is free on Shopify for a store with a very small list. Once you pass 250 people you can email, you are on a paid plan. A heads-up: the Shopify App Store listing still describes SMS in the older “credits” model, while klaviyo.com now prices messages per send in dollars. Check klaviyo.com/pricing for the live figure.

How much does Klaviyo cost?

Klaviyo prices on active profiles: anyone in your account who can be emailed, whatever their consent status. Suppressed and unsubscribed profiles do not count. Since 18 February 2025, you must be on a plan that matches or exceeds your active profile count, so a bloated list now costs money as well as deliverability.

Email plan prices from Klaviyo’s pricing calculator, as of September 2026 (USD per month):

Active profilesEmail planEmails/month
Up to 250Free500
500$205,000
1,000$3010,000
5,000$10050,000
10,000$150100,000
25,000$400250,000
50,000$720500,000

SMS, WhatsApp and other mobile messages are billed on top, per message. Add-ons such as Composer (the AI marketing agent), Customer Agent, Helpdesk, Reviews and the Personalisation analytics package are priced separately. Australian brands see the same plans; Klaviyo displays pricing in USD on its AU site.

For the full breakdown, including the billing change that catches brands out, read Klaviyo pricing in 2026.

Klaviyo’s AI features

Klaviyo markets its AI as K:AI. The headline pieces as of September 2026 are Composer, an AI marketing agent (in public beta) that builds audiences, drafts messages and plans campaigns from a prompt, and Customer Agent, a 24/7 AI service agent. Underneath sit the older, more proven tools: predictive analytics, AI segment building, subject line and content generation, and send-time optimisation.

Some of it is genuinely useful; some of it is a first draft you still need a human to edit. We go feature by feature in Klaviyo AI features, tested.

Is Klaviyo a CRM?

Yes, a B2C one. Every customer has a profile with orders, events, consent and message history, and you can act on it. What it is not is a sales CRM. There are no deal stages, sales pipelines or rep assignment. B2B companies with a sales team usually pair a sales CRM with an email tool; ecommerce brands selling to consumers generally don’t need one.

Strengths and weaknesses

Where Klaviyo is strong:

  • Data depth. Real-time, event-level data on every profile, with native ecommerce integrations. This is the moat.
  • Flows and segmentation. Conditional splits and segments can use any property, event or predicted metric.
  • Revenue reporting. Attribution for email and SMS in the same model, so you see revenue per recipient, not just open rates.
  • Ecosystem. 350+ integrations, and a large pool of operators and agencies who know it.

What are the weaknesses of Klaviyo?

  • Cost climbs with your list. Profile-based billing means an unmanaged list gets expensive. List hygiene is now a cost control, not just a deliverability habit.
  • Learning curve. The basics are easy; the powerful parts (flow filters, attribution settings, segment logic) take real time to learn.
  • Out-of-the-box templates are average. Good Klaviyo email design takes work. See Klaviyo email templates.
  • Support on lower tiers is limited. Free accounts get 60 days of email support; paid plans get email and chat, with premium support packages sold separately.
  • Default attribution flatters email. Tighten the attribution window before you trust the dashboard.

We give the full verdict in our Klaviyo review.

Who competes with Klaviyo?

It depends on the job. For all-round ecommerce email, the closest rivals are Omnisend and Mailchimp. For SMS, it is Attentive and Postscript. For enterprise, Braze, Iterable and Listrak. We compare each honestly, including when the other tool is the better choice, in Klaviyo alternatives and our head-to-heads such as Klaviyo vs Mailchimp and Klaviyo vs Omnisend.

Mailchimp or Klaviyo? For an ecommerce store that wants automated, behaviour-based revenue, Klaviyo. For a content newsletter, a service business or a very small shop, Mailchimp is often enough and simpler.

What big companies use Klaviyo?

Klaviyo reports more than 205,000 paying customers, and 4,477 of them pay over $50,000 a year (Q2 2026 results). It spans small Shopify stores to large multi-brand retailers. Our own work on it includes Better Body Co., which moved email from about 10% of revenue to the 20-25% target range and closed 2021 at $100M SGD, and Relaxium, which added $3M in incremental annual email and SMS revenue.

How to learn Klaviyo

Start with Klaviyo’s own Help Center, which is thorough, then learn in the order revenue arrives:

  1. Connect your store properly and check the data is flowing.
  2. Build the welcome, abandoned cart and post-purchase flows.
  3. Build engaged-subscriber segments and send campaigns only to them.
  4. Set up authentication and monitor deliverability.
  5. Only then move on to predictive segments, AI tools and advanced personalisation.

The bottom line

Klaviyo is a customer database with a very good messaging engine attached. For ecommerce brands that want email and SMS to drive repeat purchases, it is the default for good reason. For a newsletter-only business or a store with a handful of subscribers, it is more machine than you need.

If you are setting it up for the first time, or suspect your account is not pulling its weight, our Klaviyo agency team can help, and the free Klaviyo audit will show you where the revenue gaps are before you spend anything.

/ Frequently Asked Questions

Q.01 What is Klaviyo in simple terms? +

/ Answer

Klaviyo is a marketing platform and customer database for online brands. It connects to your store, records what each customer browses and buys, and uses that data to send automated, personalised email, SMS, WhatsApp and push messages. It is best known as the email and SMS tool most Shopify brands graduate to once they take retention seriously.

Q.02 What is Klaviyo used for? +

/ Answer

Mostly ecommerce retention: welcome series, abandoned cart and browse abandonment flows, post-purchase and replenishment emails, win-backs, segmented campaigns, sign-up forms and SMS. Brands also use it as a customer data platform, for reporting on email and SMS revenue, collecting product reviews, and increasingly for AI customer service through its Customer Agent and Helpdesk products.

Q.03 Is Klaviyo free on Shopify? +

/ Answer

The Klaviyo Shopify app is free to install, and Klaviyo has a free plan for up to 250 active profiles and 500 emails a month, with Klaviyo branding on emails and forms. Past 250 profiles you move to a paid plan, which started at $20 a month for 500 profiles as of September 2026. Shopify Email is a separate, Shopify-built tool.

Q.04 Is Klaviyo a CRM? +

/ Answer

Klaviyo now calls itself a B2C CRM, and that is a fair description for ecommerce: every customer has a profile with their orders, browsing events, consent and message history. It is not a sales CRM like HubSpot or Salesforce Sales Cloud. There is no deal pipeline or sales-rep workflow; it is built around consumers and automated messaging.

Q.05 Is Klaviyo difficult to learn? +

/ Answer

The basics are quick: most teams connect Shopify, publish a form and switch on a welcome flow in a day. Getting good takes longer, because the value sits in segmentation logic, flow filters, attribution settings and deliverability. Expect a few weeks to be competent and months to run it well, or use a Klaviyo partner to shortcut the learning.

Q.06 Who owns Klaviyo and where is it based? +

/ Answer

Klaviyo was founded in 2012 by Andrew Bialecki and Ed Hallen and is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. It has been a public company since its September 2023 IPO and trades on the New York Stock Exchange as KVYO, so it is owned by its shareholders rather than a single parent company.

Q.07 What is the difference between Shopify and Klaviyo? +

/ Answer

Shopify is the ecommerce platform that runs your store, checkout and orders. Klaviyo is the marketing layer on top: it reads Shopify's customer, order and browsing data and uses it to send automated email and SMS. Shopify has its own basic email tool, Shopify Email, but most growing brands use Klaviyo for deeper automation and segmentation.
