Klaviyo CRM: Is Klaviyo a CRM for Ecommerce?

Is Klaviyo a CRM? What Klaviyo's B2C CRM does and doesn't do, how it compares with HubSpot and Salesforce for ecommerce, and which stack fits your store.

Table of contents

“Is Klaviyo a CRM?” used to have a simple answer: no, it is an email platform. That changed when Klaviyo repositioned itself as a B2C CRM, adding customer service, a customer data platform and AI agents on top of its marketing tools. The honest answer now is “yes, for consumer brands, but not in the way Salesforce or HubSpot are CRMs”.

This guide explains what a Klaviyo CRM setup covers, what an ecommerce CRM actually needs to do, how Klaviyo compares with HubSpot and Salesforce for a store, and when you need more than one.

Is Klaviyo a CRM?

Yes, for B2C brands. Klaviyo describes itself as a B2C CRM: one customer profile holding orders, browsing, email, SMS and service history, with marketing, service and analytics built on top. It is not a sales CRM. There are no deal pipelines, quotes or rep task management, so brands with B2B or sales teams usually pair it with HubSpot or Salesforce.

As of September 2026, Klaviyo’s platform page groups the product into four parts:

  • Klaviyo Marketing: email, SMS, WhatsApp, mobile push and other channels, with flows, campaigns and an AI marketing agent (Composer).
  • Klaviyo Service: a helpdesk and Customer Agent, an AI agent for support conversations across chat, SMS, email and other channels.
  • Klaviyo Analytics: RFM analysis, attribution, benchmarks, funnel and purchase analysis.
  • Klaviyo Data Platform: the customer data platform (CDP) layer that unifies data into single profiles and connects to warehouses such as Snowflake and Databricks.

It lists 350+ pre-built integrations, including Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and Magento. (Source: klaviyo.com/platform, as of September 2026.)

So the “CRM” label is not marketing fluff. The customer record at the centre of Klaviyo is a genuine customer relationship record. It is just a record designed for thousands or millions of consumers buying online, not for a few hundred accounts moving through a sales pipeline.

What an ecommerce CRM actually needs to do

The classic CRM was built for sales teams: accounts, contacts, deals, stages, tasks, forecasts. An ecommerce brand has almost none of that. What it has is a very large number of individual customers, each generating orders, product views, cart events, email and SMS engagement and the occasional support ticket.

An ecommerce CRM has to:

  1. Hold the full behavioural record on each profile: every order, product, cart, browse and message, synced in close to real time from the store.
  2. Segment at volume on that behaviour: first-time buyers, VIPs, lapsing customers, “bought A but not B”.
  3. Act on it automatically through flows triggered by events, not by a rep remembering to follow up.
  4. Predict what happens next: lifetime value, churn risk, next order date.
  5. Report in revenue: per flow, per campaign, per segment.

Point 3 is where sales CRMs struggle with ecommerce. Their automation is built around form fills, deal stages and email engagement. A store’s most valuable triggers are commerce events: placed order, started checkout, viewed product, back in stock, price drop. We go deeper on this in Klaviyo vs HubSpot.

Klaviyo vs HubSpot vs Salesforce for ecommerce

All three are good products built for different jobs. This is how they line up for an online store, as of September 2026.

Where HubSpot wins

HubSpot is the better fit if you run wholesale or B2B alongside DTC, if a sales team works leads and deals, or if you want marketing, sales and service in one tool for a business where online orders are only part of revenue. Its free CRM is also a genuine starting point for small teams.

Where Salesforce wins

Salesforce makes sense at enterprise scale, particularly if you already run Salesforce Commerce Cloud as your storefront, have multiple brands or regions, and have the admin capacity to configure it. It is the most flexible of the three and the most expensive to run well.

Where Klaviyo wins

For a Shopify, WooCommerce or BigCommerce store where most revenue comes from online orders, Klaviyo’s data model matches how the business actually works. Commerce events arrive without custom integration work, flows can be live the same week, predictive fields appear once you have enough order history, and the person running it is usually a marketer rather than a CRM administrator.

Common stacks, and when each makes sense

Klaviyo alone. The default for most DTC brands. Store data flows into Klaviyo; Klaviyo runs email, SMS, forms, segmentation and increasingly service. Add a subscription app, reviews and loyalty through integrations.

Klaviyo plus a helpdesk. Many brands keep a dedicated helpdesk such as Gorgias or Zendesk. Klaviyo’s own Service product is newer, so compare it against what your support team already relies on before switching.

Klaviyo plus HubSpot or Salesforce. The right answer when you have a real sales motion: wholesale accounts, corporate gifting, B2B subscriptions. Let the sales CRM own accounts and deals, and let Klaviyo own consumer marketing. Sync only the fields each side needs; our Klaviyo HubSpot integration guide covers what syncs and which way. We ran a version of this split at Popl, which sells both B2B and B2C: separate journeys, separate segmentation, with email and SMS growing from under 20% of revenue to 50-60% over 21 months.

One enterprise suite. Salesforce or similar across commerce, marketing and service. Suits large, multi-brand retailers with in-house technical teams.

Should you use Klaviyo as your CRM?

Use Klaviyo as your primary CRM if:

  • Most revenue comes from online orders to individual consumers.
  • Your growth levers are repeat purchase, lifecycle marketing and retention.
  • You do not have a sales team working pipeline.

Add a sales CRM alongside it if:

  • You sell wholesale or to businesses, with account managers and deals.
  • You need quoting, contracts or sales forecasting.
  • Customer data must be shared with a large sales or service organisation already on HubSpot or Salesforce.

And whichever you choose, the CRM is only the container. The value comes from what you build on it: customer segmentation, lifecycle marketing flows, and the first-party and zero-party data that makes each profile richer over time.

What we see in ecommerce accounts

The most common problem is not the choice of CRM. It is that the brand bought a capable B2C CRM and uses it as a newsletter tool: default flows, one campaign list, no predictive segments, nobody reading revenue per recipient. The customer record is full; nothing is acting on it.

That gap is what our retention marketing work closes. If you are weighing Klaviyo against HubSpot or Salesforce, or already on Klaviyo and suspect it is under-used, a free Klaviyo audit will show you what your data could be doing, with a written 90-day plan. / Frequently Asked Questions

Q.01 Is Klaviyo a CRM? +

/ Answer

Yes, in the B2C sense. Klaviyo now positions itself as a B2C CRM: one customer profile carrying orders, browsing, email, SMS and support history, with marketing, service and analytics built on it. It is not a sales CRM. It has no deal pipelines, quoting or sales-rep task management, so B2B or high-touch sales teams usually still need HubSpot, Salesforce or similar.

Q.02 Is Klaviyo a CRM or a CDP? +

/ Answer

Both, depending on which part you mean. The Klaviyo Data Platform is a customer data platform that unifies data from your store and other sources into single profiles, and can sync with warehouses such as Snowflake and Databricks. Klaviyo's marketing, service and analytics products sit on top of those profiles, which is why Klaviyo describes the whole package as a B2C CRM.

Q.03 What is Klaviyo used for? +

/ Answer

Mainly ecommerce email and SMS marketing: automated flows such as welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase and win-back, plus segmented campaigns. It also covers sign-up forms, customer data unification, predictive analytics like predicted lifetime value and churn risk, and, more recently, customer service through its helpdesk and AI agent. Most brands use it as the hub of their retention programme.

Q.04 How much does Klaviyo cost per month? +

/ Answer

As of September 2026, Klaviyo has a free plan for up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month. Paid plans scale with the number of active profiles, meaning contacts who can receive marketing, and SMS is priced on usage. Check klaviyo.com/pricing for the current figure at your list size; our Klaviyo pricing guide walks through the tiers.

Q.05 What is the best CRM for ecommerce? +

/ Answer

For a direct-to-consumer store where most revenue comes from online orders, a B2C CRM built on order and behaviour data, such as Klaviyo, usually fits best because the data model matches how shoppers buy. If you also run wholesale, B2B accounts or a sales team, pair it with a sales CRM such as HubSpot or Salesforce rather than forcing one tool to do both jobs.

Q.06 What are the four types of CRM? +

/ Answer

The usual four are operational CRM (automating marketing, sales and service processes), analytical CRM (turning customer data into insight such as segments and predictions), collaborative CRM (sharing customer information across teams and channels) and strategic CRM (organising the business around long-term customer relationships). Klaviyo is strongest on the operational and analytical sides for consumer brands.
