Klaviyo WooCommerce: Setup, Plugin and Abandoned Cart

How to connect Klaviyo to WooCommerce with the official extension, what it syncs, how to test it, and how to build an abandoned cart flow that rebuilds the cart.

Table of contents

Klaviyo runs perfectly well on WooCommerce, but it asks more of you than Shopify does. On Shopify, the integration is close to automatic. On WooCommerce, it’s a WordPress plugin running inside your hosting, your caching setup, your security plugins and whatever your developer did to the checkout. Most of the WooCommerce Klaviyo accounts we audit are connected. Far fewer are sending every event they should.

This guide covers setup, what the plugin actually syncs, how to test it properly, and how to build an abandoned cart flow on Woo that brings shoppers back to a full cart.

How to connect Klaviyo to WooCommerce

Install the free Klaviyo for WooCommerce extension from the WooCommerce Marketplace, activate it in WordPress, then go to Marketing > Klaviyo > Connect Account. Approve the permissions in Klaviyo, set your email and SMS consent checkboxes, and click Complete setup. Test a checkout before building any flows.

Per Klaviyo’s WooCommerce setup guide as of September 2026:

Before you start

  • Be logged in to both Klaviyo and your WordPress admin. If you have access to several Klaviyo accounts, log out of the ones you don’t want to connect.
  • Temporarily disable caching and redirect plugins. This is the step people skip, and it’s the most common reason the connection fails.
  • Add Klaviyo’s IP addresses to your firewall or security plugin’s allowlist.
  • Check versions: Klaviyo’s guide lists WooCommerce 3.5 or later, and the plugin listing on WordPress.org requires WordPress 5.2+ and PHP 7.0+. The extension is compatible with WooCommerce’s High Performance Order Storage (HPOS).

Steps

  1. In WordPress, go to WooCommerce > Extensions, search for Klaviyo, add Klaviyo for WooCommerce to your cart and complete the free checkout, then click Add to Site.
  2. Go to Plugins and activate Klaviyo.
  3. Go to Marketing > Klaviyo and click Connect Account.
  4. Log in to Klaviyo and approve the integration’s permissions.
  5. Configure the email and SMS consent checkboxes shown at checkout, the disclosure text, and currency conversion if you sell in more than one currency.
  6. Click Complete setup. Your historical data starts syncing, with a progress bar you can watch.

Then re-enable your caching plugin and check the connection still holds. If it breaks when caching is back on, exclude the cart and checkout pages (and the Klaviyo script) from the cache.

The plugin: what it does and what users say

The same plugin appears as Klaviyo for WooCommerce on WooCommerce’s marketplace and as Klaviyo on WordPress.org. As of September 2026 it’s on version 3.8.3 (updated August 2026) with 100,000+ active installations.

It’s worth being honest about the reviews too: the WordPress.org listing averages 2.8 out of 5. The complaints centre on admin slowness on some hosts and sign-up forms disappearing until the plugin is reinstalled. That matches what we see. The integration itself is sound. The problems come from the WordPress environment around it. Keep the plugin updated (Klaviyo recommends enabling auto-updates), test after every major WordPress or WooCommerce update, and don’t stack it with other email marketing plugins doing the same job.

What the Klaviyo WooCommerce integration syncs

DataWhat it’s for
Started CheckoutYour main abandoned cart trigger. Includes a cart rebuild key
Added to CartEarlier cart signal, fires before the shopper reaches checkout
Placed OrderRevenue, post-purchase flows, customer segments
Ordered ProductOne event per product, for product-level segments and cross-sell
Viewed Product (onsite tracking)Browse abandonment and interest-based segments
Product catalogDynamic product blocks and recommendations
Customer profilesAdded to the list you choose, with the consent collected at checkout
Historical ordersBackfilled after connection so segments work from day one

Two add-ons are worth knowing about:

  • Unique coupons. Klaviyo can generate unique, single-use WooCommerce coupons for flows. Create the coupon in WooCommerce, configure the linked coupon in Klaviyo, set usage limits of one per coupon and one per user, and remember WooCommerce stores codes in lowercase.
  • Klaviyo Reviews for WooCommerce. Klaviyo’s native reviews product supports WooCommerce, with four installation methods depending on your setup. It’s billed separately from email and SMS.

Where WooCommerce is thinner than Shopify

The core events are all there. What takes more work is everything around them: onsite tracking depends on your theme and caching not interfering, checkout customisations (one-page checkouts, custom fields, some page builders) can stop events firing, and plugins that change how orders are created can confuse the sync. Subscriptions are a common gap. Klaviyo’s WooCommerce guide documents checkout, cart and order events but not WooCommerce Subscriptions renewals as a separate event, so check exactly what reaches Klaviyo before you build a replenishment flow on it. Our Klaviyo Shopify integration guide covers the Shopify side if you’re comparing platforms.

Test the integration before you build anything

Klaviyo’s recommended test takes five minutes:

  1. Add a product to your cart on the live site (not staging, unless staging is connected).
  2. Go to checkout.
  3. Enter an email and phone number, and tick the consent boxes if you use them.
  4. Place a test order.
  5. Within one to two minutes, check Klaviyo for a Started Checkout event, the new profile in the list you selected, and a Placed Order event.

Then do it again logged out, in a private window, on mobile. If any of those events is missing, fix it now. Flows built on missing events don’t error. They just never send.

If the connection fails with “Unable to test API by fetching order count. Invalid count”, the WooCommerce API isn’t returning the order count Klaviyo expects. The connection hasn’t been established yet, so the fix is on the WooCommerce side: usually a security plugin, a firewall rule or a server configuration blocking the endpoint. Klaviyo’s guide suggests testing the endpoint directly with a tool like Postman.

If you connected years ago, you may still be on the legacy API. Install the latest extension, create a new WooCommerce REST API key with read/write permissions, and save the settings on Klaviyo’s WooCommerce integration page to move to real-time sync.

Klaviyo abandoned cart on WooCommerce

This is where most WooCommerce stores leave money behind. The flow is simple to build, and a few WooCommerce-specific details make it work properly.

1. Choose the trigger

Started Checkout is the right default. It fires once the shopper reaches checkout, and by then you usually have their email. Added to Cart fires earlier and catches more intent, but only for shoppers Klaviyo can already identify (logged-in customers, or people who’ve clicked a Klaviyo email before). Many stores run Started Checkout as the main flow and a lighter Added to Cart flow for known visitors, with each flow excluding people already in the other.

Klaviyo can only email people it can identify. Put the email field first on your checkout so an abandoning shopper has already given you a way to reach them.

2. Rebuild the cart from the email

The Started Checkout event carries a CartRebuildKey. Per Klaviyo’s guide, link your email button to:

{{ organization.url|trim_slash }}/cart?wck_rebuild_cart={{ event.extra.CartRebuildKey }}

When the shopper clicks, their cart is rebuilt with the same items. If your organisation URL in Klaviyo is set to http://, hard-code https:// in the link instead, or the rebuild can fail. Test it on mobile, where a lost cart is most likely to mean a lost sale.

3. Build the sequence

  • Flow filter: Placed Order zero times since starting this flow, so buyers exit immediately.
  • Email 1 within an hour or two: the cart, the product image and one clear button. No discount.
  • Email 2 around a day later: address the likely objection (shipping, returns, reviews).
  • Email 3 optional, a couple of days later: a unique single-use coupon if your margins allow it.
  • SMS only for shoppers who consented at checkout, and not in the same hour as an email.

We cover timing trade-offs in detail in our abandoned cart timing guide, and you can size the opportunity with the abandoned cart revenue calculator.

4. Add browse abandonment

Once Viewed Product is firing reliably, a browse abandonment flow is the next highest-value build on WooCommerce: it catches shoppers earlier than cart abandonment, from a much larger pool.

Is Klaviyo worth it on WooCommerce?

Klaviyo says 15,000+ WooCommerce brands use it. The alternatives WooCommerce stores usually compare it with, such as Mailchimp for WooCommerce, are cheaper and simpler. Klaviyo earns its cost when you actually use purchase-driven flows and segmentation. If you’ll send a monthly newsletter and nothing else, it’s more tool than you need. The broader view is in our Klaviyo integrations guide.

Getting WooCommerce and Klaviyo working properly

The connection takes ten minutes. Getting every event firing through your caching, security and checkout setup, and building the flows on top, is the real job. Our Klaviyo setup service covers WooCommerce builds end to end, and our abandoned cart flow work picks up once the data is clean. If you’re already connected and not sure it’s all working, a free Klaviyo audit will show you which events are missing.

/ Frequently Asked Questions

Q.01 How do I connect Klaviyo to WooCommerce? +

/ Answer

Install the free Klaviyo for WooCommerce extension from the WooCommerce Marketplace, activate the plugin in WordPress, then go to Marketing > Klaviyo and click Connect Account. Log in to Klaviyo, approve the permissions, set your email and SMS consent checkbox options, and click Complete setup. Temporarily disable caching and redirect plugins while you connect, as they can block authentication.

Q.02 Is the Klaviyo WooCommerce plugin free? +

/ Answer

Yes. The Klaviyo for WooCommerce extension goes through a free checkout on the WooCommerce Marketplace, and the same plugin is listed on WordPress.org. You still pay for Klaviyo itself, which is priced on active profiles, and Klaviyo Reviews for WooCommerce is billed separately from Klaviyo's email and SMS plans.

Q.03 Does Klaviyo abandoned cart work with WooCommerce? +

/ Answer

Yes. The extension sends Started Checkout and Added to Cart events, and Started Checkout includes a cart rebuild key. Add that key to your email button link (wck_rebuild_cart) and the shopper's cart is rebuilt when they click through. Klaviyo can only send the flow to shoppers it can identify, so capture email early at checkout.

Q.04 Does the Klaviyo WooCommerce integration sync in real time? +

/ Answer

Yes. The current extension uses the WooCommerce REST API and, per Klaviyo's help centre, syncs data to Klaviyo in real time. Older setups on the legacy API should install the latest extension, create a new REST API key with read and write permissions, and save the integration settings in Klaviyo to upgrade.

Q.05 Why isn't Klaviyo tracking my WooCommerce Started Checkout events? +

/ Answer

Usually one of three causes: a caching or security plugin interfering with the extension, a checkout customisation that stops the tracking script from running, or shoppers Klaviyo can't identify because they haven't entered an email yet. Test by adding a product to your cart, entering an email at checkout and checking Klaviyo's recent activity within one to two minutes.

Q.06 Can Klaviyo create unique WooCommerce coupon codes? +

/ Answer

Yes. You create the coupon in WooCommerce, then set up the linked coupon in Klaviyo, which generates a random 10-digit code for each recipient with an optional prefix. Klaviyo recommends a usage limit of one per coupon and one per user. WooCommerce stores coupon codes in lowercase, so don't rely on capitalised prefixes.
